Capitol Hill
What investment property looks like in Capitol Hill
A historic Salt Lake City neighborhood built around the Utah State Capitol, with the Marmalade District on its west slope.
Capitol Hill takes its name from the Utah State Capitol, built on the hill between 1912 and 1916. The neighborhood's west slope, the Marmalade District, holds some of the oldest documented homes in the state, with streets named for fruit trees.
Delia is deeply connected here and in the Avenues next door, in ways that go beyond her client work in the neighborhood.
- The homes
- A genuine architectural mix spanning more than a century. The earliest Marmalade District homes date to the 1850s-1880s, simple vernacular Utah forms in adobe and stucco. Victorian styles took over from roughly 1880 to 1910. Larger architect-built mansions, built for mining and railroad money, sit along State Street and East Capitol Street nearer the Capitol itself, a real contrast to the smaller vernacular homes on the Marmalade District's west slope.
- Getting around
- State Street (U.S. Route 89) climbs the hill from downtown, with Main Street also reaching it one block to the west. The whole Salt Lake Valley, and the Great Salt Lake miles to the west, is visible from the hill.
- Nearby
- The Utah State Capitol, the Pioneer Memorial Museum, Council Hall (Salt Lake City's original city hall, relocated here), and Memory Grove, a park dedicated in 1920 to Utah's World War I dead, just east of the hill in a small canyon. City Creek Canyon separates Capitol Hill from the Avenues to the east.
