October 2026
one small
STEP AT A TIME
October asks less of you than September did. The big fall to-do list is mostly behind you now, and the days getting shorter makes a slower pace feel earned, not lazy.
If a move is somewhere on your mind for next year, this is a month to keep doing what you already started. Small and steady beats one big push.
- Revisit your number. If it has been a few weeks since you checked your home's value, the picture may have shifted. A five minute update beats a stale guess.
- Finish what you started. If August or September gave you a project, close it out now, before the holidays crowd the calendar.
- Protect one hour a week. One hour, one day, kept for sorting or planning, adds up faster than it feels like it should.

Before the holidays
- Book your furnace service now, before the calendar fills up.
- Drain and store hoses once nights dip below freezing.
- Check weatherstripping on exterior doors.
- Test outdoor lighting before the early sunsets arrive.
- Walk the yard for anything that needs putting away for winter.
Tips from my garden
Putting the garden to bed.
- Plant tulip and daffodil bulbs now, before the ground freezes. Pointy end up, about three times as deep as the bulb is tall.
- October is garlic month. Plant cloves now for a harvest next summer.
- Pull spent tomato and squash plants. If a plant was sick, put it in the trash, not the compost.
- Leave a few seed heads standing, like coneflowers and sunflowers. The birds will thank you.
- Give trees and shrubs one last deep soak before the ground freezes, especially evergreens.
- Shred the leaves you rake and spread them on your beds. Free mulch.
Downsizer corner
Finish the room you started.
Whichever room got the keep, donate, let go treatment last month, this is the month to finish it. Not the whole house. Just that one room, all the way through.
If you would like my full room by room checklist, reply to this email and I will send you my Downsizer's Guide.
