Monthly market notes, listings & local life from Delia Bayna
Happy July! Between farmers markets, canyon hikes, and a market that's finally finding its footing, there's a lot happening this month.
Here's your quick tour: home fire safety for the season, the best things to do around the valley, a fresh look at where prices are headed, and two upcoming seminars I'd love to see you at.
Fireworks are banned this year: here's what to know
With historic wildfire conditions across the state, Gov. Cox issued an executive order enacting a statewide "default" ban on personal fireworks — and every city in Salt Lake County has kept it in place. Discharging personal fireworks is not allowed anywhere in the county this Fourth of July. The state will reevaluate conditions ahead of Pioneer Day (July 24th).
Bottom line for SLC: personal fireworks are off the table this year. Catch a professional show instead — they're still permitted and safer for our dry foothills.
-
The Gateway, Downtown SLC — fireworks at 10 PM, July 4. Free viewing reservations, food & live music from 6 PM.
-
SLC Drone Show, Jordan Park — ~500 drones, July 3, 8–10:30 PM. Free, with live entertainment and food trucks.
-
North Salt Lake Liberty Fest, Eaglewood — widely regarded as one of Utah's best displays. Fireworks ~10 PM, July 3.
-
Sandy Firework Sky Concert — billed as the county's biggest 4th celebration, synced to B98.7. Show ~10 PM, July 4.
The 24th brings its own round of professional shows across the valley:
-
Days of '47 Rodeo, Utah State Fairpark — nightly shows July 22–26, each capped with fireworks and a drone display.
-
Liberty Park Pioneer Day Drone Show — 10 PM, July 24, after a full day of celebrations in the park.
-
Salt Lake Bees, America First Square — post-game fireworks after the 7:05 PM game vs. Albuquerque, July 24.
Note: the state will reassess fire conditions before Pioneer Day, so professional shows are subject to change — verify close to the date.
Skip the personal fireworks
Salt Lake City has designated no legal areas. Enjoy a city-sponsored professional or drone show instead.
Clear defensible space
Keep dry brush, mulch, and debris at least 5 feet from your foundation, deck, and fence line.
Test alarms & extinguishers
Replace smoke-detector batteries and keep a charged extinguisher in the kitchen and garage.
Report smoke fast
More than 75% of this year's fires were human-caused. If you see smoke or sparks, call it in immediately.
Fun things to do in SLC this month
The valley comes alive in July. A few favorites worth putting on the calendar:
-
Red Butte Garden Concert Series
Outdoor shows under the foothills all month — bring a blanket and a picnic. -
Downtown Farmers Market at Pioneer Park
Saturday mornings for local produce, food trucks, and makers. -
Days of '47 Rodeo & Parade
Utah's Pioneer Day celebration builds toward July 24th — a true local tradition. -
Cool off in the canyons
Big & Little Cottonwood are 15–20° cooler — perfect for a morning hike before the heat. -
Bring the pup
Camp Foothill, a free summer celebration at Foothill Village, is dog-friendly (Sat, July 18). For dog-friendly meetups and yappy hours all summer, check the Dog Friendly SLC calendar.
The Salt Lake City market right now
After a fast few years, the Salt Lake County market has settled into a more balanced rhythm. Homes are averaging 48 days on market and closing right around their asking price, which means well-priced, move-in-ready homes still move — while buyers finally have a little room to breathe. If you've been waiting, this summer is a genuine window.
Salt Lake County, most recent reporting period. Average list price was $677,685.
